The St. Tammany Parish Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, helps patients return to an active lifestyle through exercise and education. Our goal is to help you achieve and maintain a maximum level of independent functioning.
Pulmonary rehabilitation can greatly benefit those with lung disease such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Whether caused by smoking, occupational, environmental or genetic factors - these conditions leave people chronically short of breath and can be very debilitating. Routine activities, such as putting on a pair of socks, can leave a person fighting for air.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program seeks to
- Reduce participants shortness of breath and the anxiety it brings
- Increase exercise tolerance and ability to perform normal daily activities
- Increase participants understanding of their particular lung disorder
- Educate in the proper use of respiratory medications
- Teach proper breathing techniques
- Reduce the possibility of hospitalizations
- Instruct and motivate participants to maintain an exercise program
- Promote independence and self-reliance
The Pulmonary Rehab Program is 36 sessions and each session last approximately an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The success of pulmonary rehabilitation relies on the relationship between the person with lung disease and his or her team of health professionals. It is vital that the person take an active role in the program and understand the importance of regular participation.
Our Pulmonary Rehab Program provides a controlled monitored environment where patients develop friendships with others who understand what it is like to live with a lung disease. Patients find themselves quickly bonding with and supporting each other.
