Dry needling is offered through St. Tammany Health System's outpatient rehabilitation department. Trigger point dry needling uses thin, non-medicated needles that are inserted into muscle tissue. The purpose of the treatment is to reduce pain and improve movement by reducing tension in the muscle.
The needles are directed at the trigger points in the muscle because a high concentration of chemicals that cause pain are typically found in these trigger points. When the needle is inserted, it helps to normalize those chemical levels and ultimately decrease muscle tension and pain.
If you are suffering from acute or chronic pain, contact your doctor and ask for a referral to our physical therapy department to find out if trigger point dry needling would be beneficial for you and your symptoms.
