STPH Offers Hospice Volunteer Opportunities

No-obligation class will teach ways to assist hospice patients

COVINGTON, LA- STPH is holding a new hospice volunteer training class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 9 in the Abita Room at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, 1202 South Tyler Street, Covington, LA.  A free lunch will be provided, and reservations are required.

“Volunteering at Hospice is so meaningful because we treat the person and the family, not the disease,” Mary Ann Scheuermann, volunteer recruiter and community educator said.

The class will be an opportunity to learn about hospice care and ways individuals can assist Hospice’s mission of maintaining quality of life with dignity for patients in the final phase of life.  It will also acquaint volunteers with Hospice’s policies and procedures.

“Class attendees are not obligated to become Hospice volunteers,” Scheuermann said, “so this is a perfect opportunity to learn more about it and consider whether volunteering in Hospice is right for you.”

Interested people may devote their time in patient care, office assistance, bereavement support, fundraising, community events or public speaking and education on behalf of Hospice.

Hospice provides a special kind of care designed to provide sensitivity and support for people in the final phase of life.  An interdisciplinary hospice team is made up of professionals who address the medical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of the patient and loved ones.  Patients and loved ones are included in the decision-making process, and bereavement counseling is provided to the family after the death of a loved one.

“Hospice care emphasizes the quality rather than the length of life,” Angelique Knoblock, STPH Home Health and Hospice administrator said.  “It neither hastens nor postpones death.  Rather, it affirms life and regards dying as a normal process.”
