The St. Tammany Parish Hospital Clinic for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine provides a comprehensive approach to wound healing in an outpatient setting. Patients’ physicians and the wound care specialists are a team, with personal physicians attending patients’ overall medical needs and The Clinic for Wound Care treating the wound and returning the patient to the physician’s expert care.

The Wound Care Clinic, led by Dr. John Kessels, is committed to successfully treating difficult, poor-healing wounds. The team includes:

  • Physicians with advanced training in wound management
  • Nurses with advanced training in the treatment of acute and chronic wounds
  • Technicians with advanced training who perform noninvasive tests and a wide range of therapies

Wound care patients undergo a thorough diagnostic examination to identify the type of wound and the underlying problems causing the wound. After determination, the patient and wound care teams initiate a program tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Patients visit the center on a consistent basis until the wound completely heals.

The clinic treats wounds associated with a variety of conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Venous or arterial insufficiency
  • Non-healing surgical sites
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Burns
  • Cancer
  • Trauma
  • Immunological disorders

Research proves the need and efficacy of dedicated wound care clinics. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel indicates more people develop pressure ulcers than develop cancer annually and about 60,000 of those individuals die each year.

  • More than 2.5 million U.S. residents develop pressure ulcers every year.
  • More than 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes.
  • Amputation risk for people with diabetes is estimated to be 15 to 40 times greater than that of the general population.
  • Venous stasis (circulatory) ulcers affect two to five percent of Americans.

Specialty wound care treatment facilities such as the STPH Clinic for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine have reduced amputation rates significantly and reduced the length of hospital stays. Call the clinic at 985-871-6088 or ask your physician for a referral. The center accepts the same insurance plans as St. Tammany Parish Hospital.
