The St. Tammany Parish Hospital pre-operative care unit is designed with patient satisfaction in mind. Located behind the gift shop on the first floor of the main hospital building, “pre-op” is easily accessible to our patients coming in for pre-operative testing.
Designated parking spaces right in front of the hospital help speed along your pre-op visit. The Pre-op unit at STPH offers the following services to our patients:
- Lab testing
- EKG
- X-ray
- Nurse interview and patient teaching
Some of the things the nurse will go over with you during an interview are procedures you should take in preparation for surgery, such as not eating or drinking after midnight the night before surgery, what medications to take the morning of, and other issues, such as what to bring and what to leave home on your surgery day.
Most surgery procedures require that you arrive approximately one-and-one-half to two hours before your procedure. Upon arrival you will be prepared for surgery by receiving a patient ID bracelet and patient gown. You will also be given an IV and receive a brief nurse assessment and confirmation of your procedure.
The anesthesiologist will then visit you, and discuss their plan for surgery. After surgery, you may go to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to recover from anesthesia, where you will be monitored for any discomfort or pain. After you have met our discharge criteria, you will be discharged. Please remember to have with you, a responsible person to drive you home before you are released from our care.
