The St. Tammany Parish Hospital Clinic for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine provides a comprehensive approach to wound healing in an outpatient setting. Patients’ physicians and the wound care specialists are a team, with personal physicians attending patients’ overall medical needs and The Clinic for Wound Care treating the wound and returning the patient to the physician’s expert care.
The Wound Care Clinic, with John Kessels MD at its head, is committed to successfully treating difficult, poor-healing wounds and involves:
- Physicians with advanced training in wound management
- Nurses with advanced training in the treatment of acute and chronic wounds
- Technicians with advanced training who perform noninvasive tests and a wide range of therapies
Wound care patients undergo a thorough diagnostic examination to identify the type of wound and the underlying problems causing the wound. After determination, the patient and wound care teams initiate a program tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Patients visit the center on a consistent basis until the wound completely heals.
The clinic treats wounds associated with a variety of conditions, including:
- Diabetes
- Venous or arterial insufficiency
- Non-healing surgical sites
- Pressure ulcers
- Burns
- Cancer
- Trauma
- Immunological disorders
Research proves the need and efficacy of dedicated wound care clinics. The American Diabetes Association alone says some five million Americans suffer each year from chronic wounds.
- 1.5 million people who suffer from chronic wounds have diabetic ulcers
- 2.5 million people have pressure ulcers
- 1 million people have venous stasis (circulatory) ulcers
- 15 percent of all diabetics will develop chronic wounds
- Patients with diabetes have a 15-fold increase in the risk of amputation and approximately 60,000 diabetics will undergo amputation each year
Studies prove specialty wound care treatment facilities have reduced amputation rates significantly and reduced the length of hospital stays 24 percent. The American Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes-related amputations alone could be reduced 50 percent if medical teams routinely tested patients for neuropathy, educated them to prevent complications and injuries and provided them related ancillary services.
