Core Measures
Quality of care can vary by hospital. Quality measures are one way to see how a hospital cares for its patients. Several websites show how frequently hospitals provide the recommended care known to improve outcomes of patients treated for heart attacks, heart failure, pneumonia and surgery. Getting the recommended care increases the likelihood of desired outcomes. The measures you can view at The Joint Commission and U.S. Department of Health & Human Services are based on scientific evidence about treatments known to produce the best outcomes.
For each measure under heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgery you can view the proportion of cases in which a hospital provided the recommended care. As a patient or family member you can use this information to make informed decisions about you or your loved ones' health care.
