Dr. Hamid Salam has practiced clinical and interventional cardiology for the past 15 years, with the past 10 years associated with St. Tammany Parish Hospital. During that time, he has established himself as one of the most respected interventionalists on both sides of Lake Ponschartrain.
While his area of expertise is interventional cardiology, Dr. Salam provides comprehensive cardiovascular care to his patients with a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. He performs more than 500 minimally invasive cardiovascular interventions each year with an extremely low complication rate far below the national average.
Dr. Salam is well known for performing highly complex coronary interventions in advanced heart disease patients with utmost safety and excellent long-term results. He has expertise in performing complex coronary procedures, including rotational atherectomy and bifurcation lesions using a radial access which translates into lower morbidity and even lower mortality.
Dr. Salam also specializes in non-coronary interventions such as mitral and aortic valvuloplasties, ASD/PFO closures, carotid artery stenting, alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) and peripheral vascular intervention, including venous and arterial system. He also has expertise in various device implantation including pacemakers, defibrillators and biventricular (CRT) devices.
Dr. Salam is triple board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular diseases and internal medicine, and maintained all three boards during these 15 years. He received his medical degree from Dow Medical University and completed his cardiovascular fellowship in 1999 at Illinois Masonic Medical Center/Rush University in Chicago. He started private and academic practice in the Chicago area and remained associated with his group for four years. He moved to Covington in 2003 and has been affiliated with St. Tammany Parish Hospital since.
